Social Media Basics: Tip #45

Never be afraid to be different, that is,

if it's honest,
if it's natural,
it it's not for the sake of saying "I'm different"...

People will sniff out inauthentic pretentiousness like bloodhounds.

Social Media Basics: QR Madness!!! [OPINION]

I just read an article by Jeff Korhan that will definitely open your eyes to the world of QR codes. When done, I realized that only a handful of people I know, knew what a QR code was, and only another handful seem to care.

The age of the smartphone is upon us. When you start to look at what people are doing with QR codes, take this video for example, you'll will quickly see the use of QR codes is probably only limited to your imagination, granted, you'll will need a good imagination. I guess it will also depend on the educating those you intend have use your QR code, so be sure your audience knows how to use them or what they are using them for, otherwise they're useless.

If I had to chose, I'd say they will be most helpful in the retail/product industry, however, I can see some pretty unique applications for them in the information and services industries as well.

Are you using QR codes to promote your business? In what ways? Share your experiences with us!!

Fan Pages: Standard vs. Custom? [OPINION]

When I began creating fan pages, I admit to staying away from custom pages. This is mainly because I know too little html and frame code, and the iframe apps that are "code-only" favor the knowledgeable while having no mercy on the rest.

However, if you scour the daily bombardment of social media information like me, you will have no doubt found that creating custom fan pages are becoming easier to create due to some very helpful applications.

There are many click, drag and save type of applications popping up all the time, paid and free. Once upon a time, creating a website had eluded the novice designer, but now it's easy as pie. I can guess the customization of fan pages will follow the same evolution.

How do existing and potential customers view fan pages? If they have a genuine interest in page content, do they even care whether a fan page is customized or not? Does it matter?

What do you think? Drop us a line...

Social Media Basics: Measuring Social Media ROI [INFOGRAPHIC]

Measuring social media ROI continues to be the hot topic between social media thought leaders, marketing execs and CEO big-wigs. While many feel it's too difficult to truly measure the ROI, it's only made difficult when trying to connect a dollar amount to each "Like", "Follower", or "Fan".

ROI = Return on Investment

Realistically, the value of your return depends on what goals you have set when integrating social media and your current marketing strategy.  Whether you're offering products, service, or information, there are several ways, (100 at least), to measure social media ROI.

Think about why you intend to use social media and how you expect it to help your business. The following infographic shows three basic ROI measurements:

If your juices are flowing now, and you are looking to explore more ways to measure your social media success and value, I recommend reading "100 Ways to Measure Social Media" by David Berkowitz.

Music and social media: Focus! Focus! Focus!

The music industry has been historically tough on the struggling musician. But with advent of the internet, mp3's, cost-friendly cameras and social media, a person can share with hundreds or thousands of people in no time.

Unfortunately, many undiscovered artist tend spend the majority of their time online spamming links to people whom have no connections to share, nor money to spend, instead of spending the majority of time producing a marketable, quality product to sell.

But how does a musician stay on top of making quality music, making the best use of social media, and doing both well? From what I remember of my short lived musical pursuit, it's not very likely with out help. In a future blog I will get into some ways to effectively use social media for more than just link posting and shouting "follow me".

I guess this post is a mere suggestion to the talented yet undiscovered artists out there: find help maintaining your social media presence, and stay focused on what musicians love: MAKING GOOD MUSIC. (ok and partying too)

As usual, I've added a little bit of cheesiness to visualize the point. Enjoy.

Social Media Basics: Do you need it?

Today's dictionary.com "word of the day" is "yarely", pronounced YAIR-lee, meaning with quickness or agility. The word "yare" is defined: quick; agile; lively.

Seemingly outdated in use, neither gmail, blogger, twitter or facebook recognized these as properly spelled words and prompted me to correct them. But in spite of that I decided to try and find a connection to what I do as a social media coach, consultant, and advocate.

There's a great number of things that the small business entrepreneur must consider upon start-up. Despite this meticulous planning process, there are many times when the social media facets are yarely considered (or is it considered yarely?) before being thrown in the mix.

Things tend to boil down to time or money, and it's no different with marketing via social media tools. Either you have the time to do it yourself, or the money to have someone do it for you.

At a glance, using social media is a no brainer. We see all the fresh new ideas, the success stories, and naturally want to do what seems to be working for others.

However, when things like ROI, and other analytic considerations come into play, strategic planning is down right crucial. Yet, it's during this stage when many fail to answer one simple question:

Do I even need social media to achieve my goals?

Whether you're pushing product, services, or information, this question should be the first answered before walking down "Social Media Rd."

Tell us your stories about social media planning done right, and wrong. We'd love to hear your tales.

When boredom attacks...

It doesn't happen very often to me personally, but sometimes the greatest ideas are spawned out of boredom. Now, make no mistakes, the slideshow below is NOT a great idea. In fact, it's corny as hell. But you never know what'll drive a concept home, and it did make me chuckle, (well last night it did) so I decided to share. Feel free to pass it long.

Solidifying your Social Media Presence Gets Serious!

Beyond the standard maintenance routine is where aspects of social media management get deep, especially when it comes to building your audience and maintaining an online community that's relevant and reputable.

There was a time when a business would place a new ad in the paper, sit back, and wait. Now, due to the social media boom, it's just not enough. People are talking and deciding what to consume based on the experiences and advice of their peers, and more importantly, based on relationships they form with businesses through social media.

Because of this, it's crucial for your business to tap into the information being shared about your market, and become apart of the very information being shared.  Some of the ways this is done is by:

  • Monitoring your market's social space
  • Maintaining your brand loyalty, image and reputation
  • Creating relevant content
  • Rewarding brand loyalty and advocacy
  • Customer support
  • Analyzing what works and what doesn't
  • Profile and community optimization
